The Health Benefits of Fresh Air

Caregiver in Sharon PA

Spring is here and there’s nothing quite like opening windows and letting in the fresh air. It tends to put people in a better mood, but science and research over the years have shown that there are Caregiver-in-Sharon-PAother real health benefits to fresh air – both physically and mentally.

In June 2010, the Journal of Environmental Psychology published an abstract of several studies that showed the direct link between being outdoors in nature and improved health.

On average, people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors; some aren’t able to get outside at all. As the family caregiver for your parents or other loved ones, you should encourage them to get outdoors whenever possible.

Being outside, especially in the sun, gives a person vitamin D, which helps reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis or other bone diseases, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, heart disease, and more.

It can also strengthen their immune system by providing fresh oxygen to their body, allowing their white blood cells to fight and kill off bacteria and germs. At the same time, fresh air can help reduce an overactive immune system for seniors with autoimmune conditions, such as lupus.

Fresh air cleans the lungs by allowing them to expand more, thereby taking in more clean air. When exhaling, airborne toxins are released from their lungs.

Fresh air also lets people think more clearly, increases energy, improves heart rate and blood pressure, and lowers their body temperature.

If your loved one is not able to get out of the house, there are things that can be done to bring fresh or clean air inside.

Besides opening the windows whenever possible, indoor plants can be placed throughout the house, providing a source of oxygen. Your family member could also sit by a window, or on a patio or deck while reading a book, listening to music, or simply listening to nature.

Lastly, fresh air improves one’s mood. Oxygen stimulates the body to produce serotonin–a chemical that lightens one’s mood and increases a sense of calm and well-being.  The level of serotonin in their body is affected by the amount of fresh air they take in. The more serotonin produced, the lighter a person’s mood and feeling of happiness, which in turn can make a person feel relaxed and renewed.

All in all, there’s something definitely that can be said for encouraging our loved one to stop to smell the roses, or just to get breath of fresh air.
