Elder Care in Sharpsville, PA: – Issues with Guilt

Most people are in denial when it’s related to aging.  Our society spends millions of dollars trying to retain a youthful look avoiding wrinkles, and all other signs of growing old.  Sooner or later, the responsibility of dealing with aging comes knocking at our door. This is especially true when it starts to affect our parents.  The issue of elder care and the accompanying guilt is bound to surface.

Most people view their life in a time line such as this: they are born, their parents raise them, and they grow up and raise their own family.  Rarely do they continue on that time line to caring for their elderly parents.  Yet it often becomes a necessity, and then the impact is felt in a big way – financial, emotional, physical, practical, social and even mental point of view.

What are some of the struggles you might feel when caring for your aging parents?b2

  • Having to make decisions on your parent’s behalf that they always made for themselves – financial, medical, personal decisions.
  • You feel like there’s been a role reversal.  You, the child, feel like the parent while your parent feels like your child, because of what you have to do to take care of them.
  • Natural emotional reactions such as frustration, anger, sympathy, impatience, etc. with the daily issues that arise.
  • Guilt that you aren’t doing a good enough job, or that you resent having this responsibility at this time in your life.
  • Worry, because their level of care is only going to increase as time marches on.
  • Angry that you never planned for this, and now you must figure out how to carry the burden yourself.

What can you do to lighten your load, and enjoy this last bit of time with your parent?

  • Foster patience.  Yes there may be some trying times, but cultivating your patience will help you through some of them.
  • Take time for yourself.  You cannot embed yourself in caregiving at the expense of all other people in your life, and all other areas of your life. You will end up burned out and not able to care for anyone.
  • Make a support system for yourself.  Include other family members, your loved one’s doctor, neighbors and close friends.  Let them all help you as much as they are willing and able.
  • Carefully consider getting some elderly home care to help you out, even to start out with part-time so that you have some days off.
  • Find ways to make fun memories with your parents while you can.  You will look back on them for years to come, even after they’re gone.
