Elder Care near Sharon PA: Coping with Cancer

A son’s story dealing with his father’s diagnosis of cancer”

There were many years when Michael wanted to spend more time with his father, but he was always busy with work, family, and other obligations that he never seemed to have the time.  It was like the song Cats in the Cradle, but this was real life for him.  When his mother approached him one afternoon to talk about the prospect of elder care for his father, Mike was a bit surprised.

His father was beginning to have some trouble tending to his own basic care and his mother didn’t think that she could offer him what he needed; she didn’t have the strength and was dealing with her own physical issues.  By the time that they had hired elderly home care, Mike’s father’s health was even more of a concern.

He didn’t have the best insurance, so he didn’t go to the doctor, even when things were bothering him.  He had to be in lots of pain before he would call the doctor.  One afternoon he decided to call and make an appointment.  The possibility of cancer didn’t even enter Mike or his mother’s mind since his father didn’t smoke; he ate fairly well throughout his life, and wasn’t exposed to many harmful chemicals as part of his job.  It was a surprise, to say the least that this was the doctor’s diagnosis after running test.

At first, Mike didn’t know what to do and his mother was in shock.  His father didn’t say much, as was usual; he kept things to himself and didn’t believe in sharing emotions.  However, Mike knew that he had to find the right level of care to give his father the best chance at getting more years, beating cancer, and being healthy again.

Mike first chose to help his father find the right doctor.  Trust is essential when it comes to elder care and cancer.  It took some time, but they found one that his father could rely on.

The second thing that Mike did was to get his father to communicate.  Being able to communicate was essential to helping him get the best care.

Once they had those bases covered, it was necessary to find a support group that his father could talk to.  This consisted of other cancer patients and even survivors.  It gave his father a great deal of inspiration, and ideas about how to approach treatment and care.

Finally, Mike knew that finding the right elderly health care for his father would be important for his long-term health and prospects.  Mike and his mother worked together to help him recover and beat the cancer and today, even though he continues to rely on elder care, he still has a full and rich life with the woman of his dreams.
